Innovation and clinical research are key elements within the roles of many healthcare scientists and it is important for patients that NHS scientists are trained in research methodologies and know how to implement cutting edge technologies in the workplace for the benefit of patients. To understand the context of scientists in clinical academic careers, it is important to have intelligence around the scientific workforce.

This is a new management role to provide oversight of the development and delivery of the clinical academic and innovation areas of healthcare science training on a national, four nations, basis and across the whole scope of healthcare science specialties (currently 32 sciences). To deliver the role effectively, the post holder will also be expected to develop an understanding of the scientific workforce available to engage with clinical academic careers.

The post holder will be based in the National School for Healthcare Science (NSHCS), hosted by HEE, and will work closely with specialist scientific and non-scientific educational staff in the school and in HEE including the Workforce planning department, but also with other key stakeholders including, National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Wellcome Trust and other charities, higher education partners, industrial partners, professional bodies, national education commissioners, private and NHS training providers,  senior scientists and Trust  Lead Scientists and research leads.

Reporting directly to the Head of School, this post is for a highly visible, national scientific lead for healthcare science academic careers and the post holder will develop an understanding of the workforce intelligence underpinning the clinical academic workforce.

You will have a good balance of relevant experience and skills gained by working in a Healthcare Science discipline within an NHS organisation for a number of years. You will be able to demonstrate strategic thinking and have proven ability to lead and manage scientists within the NHS. You will have demonstrable research skills evidenced by scientific publications and/or contributions to innovative guidelines or audits or equivalent reports. You will be registered as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

You will need to ensure the maintenance of appropriate professional standards and the professional reputation of the school. A highly skilled communicator, you will be persuasive and able to negotiate and influence outcomes on behalf of the undergraduate healthcare science education and training community, the school and other arenas including within HEE and NHSE.

You will have an honours degree in an appropriate scientific subject; a higher degree or equivalent experiential learning and registration with an appropriate healthcare science regulatory body. Leadership or educational qualifications would be highly desirable, but not essential.

The School is based in Birmingham but there will be a requirement for travel and to stay at venues nationally, so the post holder should expect to work flexibly as required.
